SEPTEMBER 2017 ADOPTIONS

SEPTEMBER 2017 ADOPTIONS

As fall arrived, so did the adoptions! With the opening of our new adoption studios, 63 of our cats found homes in August and September vs. 48 cats last year.

We saw a number of our forgotten kittens graduate, including Leaf and Aspen, who made an amazing transformation after being on bite quarantine at the Oakland shelter. Sweet senior Gemma found her people through our foster program, and Zoey made her way home to join two other Cat Town alums.

Debunking Myths About Black Cats: Pt. 1

MYTH #1: BLACK CATS ARE BAD LUCK

Now that it's fall, black cats are popping up everywhere; in Halloween décor, costumes, and TV specials. Sadly, actual black cats are often second-class citizens of the feline world. Did you know black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the country, according to the ASPCA? That's why the month of October is Black Cat Awareness Month, celebrated by rescues and shelters across the country.

KITTEN WIRE: TABBY TAKEOVER

OAKLAND, Calif. —  Young tabby cats have taken over at Cat Town. Multiple eyewitnesses report conditions have reached peak cuteness.

Nine tabby kittens, all members of the Forgotten Kitten Project, have been spotted in two groups at the Studios at Cat Town, chasing feather toys, bounding around on shelves, piling up in fur pyramids for naps, and otherwise displaying maximum adorableness.

Join Us! Adoption Center Grand Opening Sunday 10/1

It's been months in the making, but the time has finally come for us to hold the grand opening of our expanded adoption center here at Cat Town!

Thanks to Maddie's Fund and Pet Food Express, we're giving even more of Oakland's vulnerable shelter cats the opportunity to find their families. Cats are ofter stressed by the shelter which can make it difficult, if not impossible, for them to find adopters. With our Adoption Center Studios, cats who have dietary restrictions, health issues, a preference for being an only cat, or any number of other things, can meet their future families in a safe and comfortable space.

KITTEN WIRE: 11 KITTENS ADOPTED, WHO WILL BE NEXT?

OAKLAND, Calif. — Goodbye is the goal.

That's the mantra in animal welfare work. And that's what I've had to tell myself all summer as tabbies, torties, mini-panthers, gingers and so many other balls of fur landed at Cat Town as part of our Forgotten Kitten Project

The risk of falling in love with a pet you foster or help care for at a rescue is a real hazard. Letting go is hard. But anyone you meet in this line of work will tell you that saying goodbye means being able to save more lives.
