September 2023 Adoptions

In September, we helped 42 cats find homes, bringing us to a total of 334 adoptions so far this year! That means, over the past 9 months:

  • 107 tiny kittens made space for older cats at the shelter

  • 108 cats in bonded pairs stayed together

  • 81 sick and injured cats found good health and happiness

  • 67 stressed cats could relax and feel safe again

  • 58 black cats got the attention they deserved

  • 53 Forgotten Kittens found courage and learned to love

  • 36 senior cats landed on their feet

  • 8 cats with FIV found caring adopters

Teamwork makes the dream work, and that’s certainly true at Cat Town! As we’ve shared with you all year long, 2023 has been a doozy. There are more cats coming into the Oakland shelter than ever — in fact, they’ve seen 600 more cats than last year. Cat Town is a tiny team, but every member of our community helps us rise to the challenge of doing more — and together, we are a powerful force for good!

We’re proud to do this work with you. Whether you volunteer, donate, advocate, or support from the sidelines, you power Cat Town, and make it possible to help the cats who need us most. Here are just a few of the adoptions you made possible last month.

Young Athina was conflicted in her cage at Oakland Animal Services. She would swat defensively in fear and was upset to be around so many other cats — then would want attention, but would quickly get overwhelmed. We got this scared girl into a foster home, and she transformed into “a total doll.” After fostering 16 cats for us, her foster let us know that Athina was the one she couldn’t let go. Athina is now staying put for good, and loving every minute of her new life!

After 11-year-old Koosh’s guardian passed away, he needed a soft spot to land. He moved from home to home before being brought to a local shelter, and then arrived in our care. At our Adoption Center, he charmed everyone he met with his affectionate personality, and quickly amassed a small fan club. We got him a vet check-up, confirming his overall good health, and in just two weeks, he found a home with a sweet family, including an elderly dog to be his buddy.

When Fiona arrived at a local shelter at 10 weeks old, she didn’t make as much progress warming up to people as her littermates did, so her most likely outcome was to be placed outdoors as a community cat. However, once a shelter volunteer took her in to work with her one-on-one, she started showing signs she’d like to live in a home! We brought this Forgotten Kitten to our Adoption Center, and seeing more confident, social cats interact with guests helped her become even more comfortable. Last month, she got adopted, and she now lives on her adopter’s lap, purring up a storm.

Sweet little Gracie and Frankie arrived at Oakland Animal Services as newborns, and were fostered through them. We brought the duo to our Pet Food Express adoption area to help free up shelter resources, and they got adopted together in just two weeks. While their adopter had cats growing up, this is their first time having cats on their own, so we’re supporting them with our volunteer Case Manager program. The gals are doing great!

Ten-year-old Peach arrived at the Hayward shelter from a home with too many animals. She was bright, alert, and sweet as can be at the shelter, but shy around new faces. She had flea dirt and little scabs on her body, as well as hair loss and a mammary mass that required surgery. We helped her recover in a foster home, where we learned this senior plays like a kitten! When her adopter asked us about senior cats, Peach won them over right away. We’re so happy she’s found a kindred spirit!

Sami was a stray brought into Oakland Animal Services by one of their animal control officers. Although he was microchipped, nobody redeemed him. Sami had a fractured leg, which the shelter treated, and we brought him into our care to make more room for incoming cats at the shelter. He was adopted from us after only one week! His adopter tells us, “Sami has been doing great, and gets along super well with my other cat, Tiramisu. They're inseparable!”
